![]() ![]() There’s a distinct feeling of trying to be whatever Year One wasn’t, and forgetting that more than anything Year One was excellent. Snyder tries to recreate classic moments like the “Yes Father” scene, and it just does not work. ![]() I remembered Zero Year being my favorite part of Snyder’s run besides Court, and I am very surprised to say that statement did not hold up to rereads. When it comes to the writing, it’s fairly disappointing. I honestly don’t have the words to express just how much I love these colors, they’re just beautiful and the book is worth reading just for them. The colors are vibrant and beautiful, and everything just looks better. It’s very clear that he changed his game up for this arc, and it works so well. By the art I specifically mean FCO Plascencia’s colors, which are absolutely stunning. ![]() No, not Capullo’s pencils, which continue to be solid. The best part about this book is the art. And while this story isn’t bad, it just goes to show that putting yourself up against the best and not being up to snuff will make you look terrible in comparison. So when Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo tried to do Year One but for the New 52, people were understandably cautious. It’s by far the best origin ever written for any one character, and it’s just so consistently excellent in both writing and art. Batman Year One is one of the top two Batman stories ever. ![]()
